A LESSON LEARNED

I make copies of everything and I try to back up things best I can on the computer when I remember. I learned that lesson the hard way a long time ago with my first computer "Rupert". A friend told me."back-up... back-up everything, it's your best friend..save everything you can."  When Rupert decided he was on his last legs..in went the discs and copying began. I also decided, at that time, that I would have all my writings in several different places so that there would always be a back up of sorts. Spaces had a back up at Blogspot. Blogspot had a back up at something called "Authornation".
So much for that idea. For a long time now the site "Authornation" has been shut
down and all my posts there lost to me. Makes me start thinking that maybe even multiple backing up things isn't really safe.  You can use  those thumb drive, memory sticks, but if your computer is no longer working or there is NO POWER they are useless. Nothing is ever safe, unless you
have that printed copy in your possession. Now that means paper and ink and lots of storage space. The cycle goes round and round. To copy or not to copy that is the question! I guess that is my lesson learned. Some blogging family have lots of interesting photos and materials in their blogs..what if all that went POOF? I tell you I would be one very upset person for sure. I was very happy when SPACES allowed us to put all the entire posts we had at Wordpress. It took some time but even my comments from years ago are there now, including my guestbook. Someday when I get rich, I will get one of those books where you can print out all your blog posts. Now that would be so neat to have that in print as a back up. Do you copy things or back up things on your computer all the time?? How often? I guess one just has to get in the habit of doing it. I am a slacker so guess I better get busy.

Not much to report from here..at least the temperatures are not in the below zero category this winter so far. I am happy for that. I have shoveled only 2 times and that is just amazing for winter in Michigan. Today will be near 40..YES 40!! Very happy camper here..not picnic weather, but certainly good walking and shopping.
HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!

Sorry to say I'm a slacker too. I do have some things on scandisks like pictures etc.

It has been a mild winter and I'm glad of that. We deserve that once in awhile.

I'm definitely a slacker. I don't really know why...maybe it's the trouble of keeping things or the feeling that nobody really cares anyway...I can't say. It's been mild here too and it looks like this next week will be near fifties all week long. Maybe spring will actually arrive on time weather-wise this year...so far it actually looks possible!

I use several different google apps to save things. Google docs for documents, gmail for names, addresses and phone numbers and Picasa for pictures. I also have an external hard drive as a backup. I've learned the hard way and try to take advantage of as many kinds of backup as possible.

Official total for us was 8.5 to 9" of heavy, wet snow but that was measured at the community college on the east end of town. We're on a ridge just west of town and got at least 10" but it was 60 degrees here Saturday and 44 with sunny skies today so the snow won't last long.

I have 2 dedicated 500Gb portable hard drives just for photos and back those up once a month. In the 3 years I've been shooting, usually at least 100 frames each day, I've still not managed to fill more than a third of either drive (I back up to both drives in case one fails.)I also back up all my files and blogs on yet another dedicated drive and that's done weekly.

I've lost so much irreplaceable data over the years that backing up has finally become second nature to me. I may overdo it but I haven't lost much since I got in the habit.

In 20 years of computing I have been through so many, glitches, failures and catastrophic crashes that my friends call me for advice because when it comes to 'puter problems I have either done it, seen it or heard about it.

I have a 3 Terabyte external HD to store things on. I al grateful too that WP let us store things. I don't think my guestbook is there. I thought they said your blogs and maybe comments only. Guess not.

I have my important pics on my HD and that is backed up on my external HD. The blogs are all backed up too. So..if worse comes to worse..I may have it..only a catastrophe will tell. xoxox
